Human ingenuity creates sustainable solutions
The idea of sustainability is not a new one, any subsistence farmer who ate their last chicken would have learned the concept the hard way. Likewise, on a larger and more commercial scale, the idea of crop rotation increased harvest yields as each plant consumed a different set of nutrients from the soil.
We know know about soil erosion, deforestation and collapsing fish stocks. This forum will focus on the sustainability of energy sources. We’ll discuss the differences between renewable energy, and the burning of fossil fuels.
The threat that the worlds climate faces, and general levels of toxicity are perhaps an existential crisis that is comparable to the great extinctions of pre-historic times.
Perhaps the concerns are overblown, or technology will allow us to fix and rebalance the earths balance. Without knowing the future, here are the choices:
- To take the threat seriously, clean up the environment and protect fragile ecosystems and be wrong.
- To take the threat seriously, clean up the environment and protect fragile ecosystems and be right.
- To ignore the threat, neglect to clean up the environment and protect fragile ecosystems and be wrong.
- To ignore the threat, neglect to clean up the environment and protect fragile ecosystems and be right.
Which is the best step to take? You don’t need to be a grandmaster at chess, or an exert at game theory to realise that there are 2 main choices, and 4 possible destinations.
If we ignore the threat, it could mean the end of the family line, for all families human or otherwise. If we take the threat seriously and we’re wrong, then we still help the problems of pollution and environmental chaos.
The choice seems clear.
